Tourmaline Black

Couple of questions about some crystal points I just bought...?
I just ordered black tourmaline points and they're perfect. Too perfect. The other tourmaline bits I have are cracked, chipped... I'm skeptical. So my first question is... is it possible to tell real gems from fakes? If so, how?
I wondered... how are gempoints made? Here's a picture on ebay of something similar to what I bought, hopefully the link works...this isn't the seller I bought mine from, BTW... .... http://cgi.ebay.com/BLACK-TOURMALINE-Hea...
not trying to trash the seller, BTW... they sell a huge collection of different types of stones... I just can't believe how perfect these are. How do you do this to a stone?
BTW... YA didn't give me any good suggestions as to where to ask this, so if I asked in the wrong section, my apologies.
A really high grade piece of black tourmaline can be very smooth with no indentations and it's point can be as sharp as a pencil tip. When you get a tumbled stone, you will most likely see little cracks and crevices in it.
The best thing to do is to feel it out. Hold your old tourmaline in the palm of your hand and see if you can feel anything. If you can't then mentally ask what it is good for and see what words come up. Then put that stone down, clear the energy off your hands by running them in cold water...or clapping them and then hold your new one in your hand.
The stones will speak to you. Tourmaline is super powerful and black tourmaline has an energy to it that is hard to mistake for something else...I love black tourmaline.
By the way, sometimes people who carve rocks do it under water or with the stone very wet. This stops them from cracking.
