Touch Gray

Why does my flute turn my chin gray after playing for a long time?
Everytime I play my flute for 1+ hours, the area right under my mouth (where the mouth plate would touch) turns gray. Is this normal? The only thing I can think of is that my polishing cloth has some tarnish or something on it and I'm just transferring it on to the plate, but I'm really not sure. If someone else has this happen to them, do you have any suggestions for how to get it off or to prevent it? I really appreciate it.
This has happened to me as well as many other people in the flute section of my school band. My band teacher said that it happens more often right after polishing a flute, so only polish it when you need to; excessive polishing tends to leave more of a mark. Other than that, I'm not sure exactly what the cause is.
