Does anyone know how you go about getting a therapy dog?
I have heard there are programs/people available that set people in need with therapy dogs. I would love to have one - I can rarely get out of my house due to physical condition and could really need the love and comfort of a dog.
I think you mean a service dog. A therapy dog is one that goes to hospitals, nursing homes etc to cheer people up. A service dog is a dog that has been individually trained in work or tasks to aid its disabled handler.
There are quite a few programs that will train a dog for someone with physical disabilities, some of them are even free or low cost (others can be up to $20,000.)
A dog can be trained by the owner, however this is best recommended for someone with experience and/or a good private trainer on the side.
Here's a list that might help you get started on your search.

Some places will place a dog no matter what state the person is in, others only in their area.
Good luck.
Edit:
To the poster below me, you must be on the west coast..this side it's Paws With a Cause that you hear daily
However I believe both of those places do place dogs nationally (I know for a fact PWAC has even placed in Hawaii.)
The hard part is meeting their criteria. I'm not their cookie cutter disability profile, so I went the OT route.
