Are there any salons that comb out dreads? What is the best locking method?
I am growing out my hair naturally. I want dreads for style and to grow my hair out to the best potential length. I do plan on combing the dreads out at a certain point. What locking method would be best for my hair so it wont be extremely difficult to comb out the dreads in the future? What is the best method for combing out dreads and are there salons that do it?
If you don't see having dreadlocks as permanent or at least a semi-permanent style, I would recommend against getting the hairstyle. How about getting synthetic dreads and having them removed then redone monthly? This way, your hair does not lock and you can go to other hairstyles if you are having second thoughts. Having dreads is a commitment and requires maintenance (just any other hairstyle). There are not many salons, if any, that will comb out dreads because is such a long and taxing process.
However, if you must do it the regular way, I would recommend that you palm-roll your dreads. This way, your hair is being coiled in one direction and would be best if you did attempt to comb out the lock. I also heard that Sisterlocks, a type of locking, can be undone, but on the other hand the process can be pricey! Latch-hook methods and interlocking will definitely be the ones to stay away from since they instantly lock the hair because the hair/root is somewhat "woven" by the particular tool/process it takes to do it.
Letting you know now that combing out dreads is very difficult and can take from a couple of days to a week or so to complete; especially if you do not know how to do it. Not to mention, the hair is damaged but can be repaired; but do not expect the best result unless you're considering cutting the locked part off your hair off and leaving the root. Also, even though the lock may look full, it could be a lot of dead hairs that detached from the root/scalp and are only contained in the lock itself.
