Is Penicillin a narrow or broad spectrum drug?
I've been looking this up all morning and i'm starting to pull my hair out!
As far as I got, it seems to be both, but i don't understand how, and what the difference between the two are.
ah well you say it's broad spectrum, but my pharmacology notes state that for example Benzylpenicillin is narrow-spectrum, specific to strep and meningococ, indicated in anthrax, diphteria, leptospiroris, lyme disease etc.
so what do you say to that? are my notes wrong?
The penicillins are beta lectam antibiotics. They work by preventing bacteria from producing cell walls by blocking the transpeptidation reaction. The reaction cross links glycan linked peptide chains, and without these, the cell wall is no longer stong enough. Also they stimulate the release of bacterial enzymes called autolysins which degrade the cell wall.
Penicillins act on gram positive bacteria, and some modern synthetic penicillins are able to penetrate the capsule and act on gram negative.
Taking this into account, i would say thats as a group they are broad spectrum because they act on most gram positive indescrimenantly and some gram negative. However, individually, some in the group may be considered narrow because they only act on a small group.
I hope that helps
