Special Effects

What is a special effects makeup artist expected to do?
Besides fake injuries and other gory stuff, what kind of makeup does a special effects makeup artist do?
Hello
As materials get better, the work gets more varied all the time.
Aside from casualty simulation there is:
* Aging for when performers have to appear older,
* Turning people into aliens or monsters for shows like Buffy or Dr Who
* Making stunt performers appear more like the actors they are doubling
* Creating rigs such as for bleeding, pulsating skin or
* Horns, teeth, fangs, eyes for fake head or creatures
* Animatronics (a branch of the same area-sloths eye in 'The Goonies', for example)
* The many skills involved in the various processes-sculpting, moulding, casting etc
* The undersuits and fabrication of supports and rigs
* Attaching 'skins' to animatronic rigs
* liaise with other departments to decide who is doing what
* Breaking down a script and pricing the jobs
* Designs and pitches to secure jobs
I have written an article on this very subject, oddly enough. You can view/download it freely here:

Hope this is of use to you.
Kind regards
