Can i catch what my housemate has via using the same shower gel?
My housemate has herpes,i think it's in the genital area-but i'm really not sure. He used my partners shower gel and i'm scared that there will be "active bacteria" on or inside the shower gel? Can that happen? He's not very hygienic,he doesnt was his hands after going to the toilet...if i were to touch the door handle and then touch my lady parts-could i then catch it? He doesnt wash his dishes properly either-he just rinses them with water-not always with washing up liquid-if i were to use the same unwashes cuttlery-could i catch it then? i dont want to ask him as it may cause friction with my boyfriend and other housemates...am i just being paranoid?
Potentially there is a risk, but this risk is minimal. If you think about it - can you ever be 100% that the cutlery, crockery and glassware you use in a restaurant has not previously been used by someone who has a contagious condition? Can you be certain it was washed thoroughally?
The answer is obviously no, but the point Im making is that you need to get the risk in perspective. To minimise the chance of cross-infection - make sure your towels, sponge, facecloth etc are used only by you. This will probably mean taking them into the bathroom with you each time and asking your bf to do the same. As for the shower gel - I seriously doubt there is any risk, because he is technically using it after it is outside the container.
You don't say if your housemate is being treated for his herpes. If he is, that's something - if not you do need to address whether or not he is doing all he can to eliminate the chance of cross-infection. If he isn't - be strong and ask him to leave. He's putting people's health at risk.
