Does Israel have any monster legends or cryptozoological features?
It just occurred to me that I've never heard of any "Dead Sea Monster" or the likes along the lines of Nessie or Ogopogo, the Chupacabras, Bodmin Beast, or the Yeti. But local legend almost always yields some weird beasts, anywhere in the world.
What does Israel have to offer in that regard?
Being one of the most diligently chronicled places in the world, it would be quite a sensation to find some accounts of inexplicable sightings of creatures there, especially if they can be traced back in time for millennia.
Well, it's probably just a cryptozoologist's dream, but maybe someone knows of anything?
The first place to look is the Old Testament. Lots of giants, including Nephalim giants, Behemoth and the unrelated giant, Goliath, and the sea serpent, Leviathan. Also unicorns, cherubim and angels.
Nephilim (Giants, KJV) - The offspring of 'Heavenly Beings' and Human women. Genesis 6:4.
Behemoth: a giant mentioned in Job 40:15-24.
Goliath the Giant - 1 Samuel 17:1-58. No known connection to Nephilim giants.
Cherubim: Cherub with the flaming sword Genesis 3:24, four Cherubim Ezekiel 1:5 - each had four faces-that of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle Ezekiel 1:10, and each had four wings. In their appearance, the cherubim "had the likeness of a man" Ezekiel 1:5
Leviathan: See Job 3:8 and 41:1-34 and Isaiah 27:1. In the New Testament, see Psalms 74 and 104
Unicorns (Psalms 22:21 KJV NIV) - Many Biblical scholars disagree with the King James Version (KJV) in regards to this translation among others, citing “inaccurate manuscripts” as the source of confusion.
Angels are everywhere, see Daniel and Ezekiel too. See also, the New Testament, all four gospels and Revelation.
In Hebrew folklore, we have the Golem, a great hero animated from inanimate matter--perhaps western culture's first robot. Folklore also gives us Ziz, a giant bird.
Per Hebrew legend, at the end of days, a banquet will be held, and attendees will feast on Leviathan (water) Behemoth (land) and Ziz (air).
There is plenty of ground for your cryptozoologist's plow in the legends and folklore of Israel! Your dream has come true!
