My friend said it was "cruel" to get my St Bernard's fur cut?
My Saint is ALWAYS swimming in the pool. He has really long fur (rough coat) and he is Huge! It takes forever for him to dry, so the last few summers I have been taking him to the groomers to have his fur cut. I don't get him shaved to the skin, I have the groomers leave 1/2 inch, just so its not a pain in the butt for me to keep his fur managed with all his swimming.
So, my "dog savvy" friend said its cruel to get his fur cut, that it makes him hotter, and will ruin his fur as it won't ever be the same. Is this true?
My groomer has NEVER said it was cruel, to cut his fur down. The only thing she said was to a soap free amino flex shampoo (that she sells) and bath him to remove chlorine build up.
So, it is OK for me to get his fur cut right?

Well, fur traps in heat which helps protect the dog from getting too hot.
But it is not cruel at all. It doesn't hurt him to get his fur cut to 1/2 inch.
Panting also keeps the dog cool and as long as you give him clean, fresh water as well and try to keep him in shady areas if it gets to a blazing heat outside, he will be fine.
She's overreacting. It's not "cruel".
