How do you hit a ball on a bad set?
It's so hard for me to get a kill off of any of my setters' sets. I end up having to roll shot it or down ball it every time.
Do I just automatically have to do that all the time, or is there something I could do?
First of all, talk to your setter and ask for a different set, maybe higher, closer or further from the net, etc. If you don't see a change, talk to your coach and they will be able to help you out by talking to the setter as well. One thing you can do is start your approach in a different spot to accommodate your setter's regular set. In a practice, make sure you try to hit the ball as hard as you can with the set to see if you can still get a kill if the ball is set badly. Try and change your angle or swing so that you can still get a kill. A kill also doesn't mean that you have to hit the ball extremely hard to the floor. Be smart with your decisions. You can push the ball to the one-spot or four-spot. Those two places are usually open. Learn to realize where the open spots are and tip or roll shot to those. You will still end up with a ton of kills. Down balls work too, but try all of your options and find out which one helps you the most and stick to it. Good Luck!
