Reflect Milk
how can i boost a food/restaurant business?

Hi All, I have a friend who owns a newsagent and is doing very well in business, he bought the place next door to his newsagent to open a takeaway/cafe/restaurant as well. All his customers love him, problem is theres too much competition for takeaways here and the location is not good for restaurants/cafe, we're trying to find a niche in the market, so how can he associate his newsagent business with this food business, so it runs as well as his newsagent business. We were thinking to include things like if people order food to be delivered we can offer to deliver their domestic shopping, i.e. milk/bread etc from the newsagent. We were also thinking to change the logo in the food restaurant so it looks the same as the newsagent logo to reflect consistency. Perhaps we can offer some sort of deal like if you spend over a certain amount in newsagent then u get 5% disocunt of ur fast food, i dont know its all up in the air now, any other bright ideas.

You have good ideas so far. The idea to be consistent in the logo and branding is ideal, even with a continuous sign over both storefronts, but with two names, one for the news agent and one for the cafe.

If there's lots of competition and the location is not good, then you have two different problems to solve. How close is the competition and what kind are they? If there is already Chinese, Indian, burger, etc., then you may need to be different. Also, what type of food do the newsagent's clients like? Can he do an informal survey and ask? That way he can tailor the menu. Also, if he has very regular customers, perhaps he can offer them coupons for a discount at the restaurant to distribute to their friends to get them to try the restaurant.

Why isn't the location good? Is it because it gets low traffic during lunch hour (as opposed to morning and evening). Other reasons? This may be the toughest one to solve, and you haven't provided much information on why the location is not good.

Most important, though, is to know what type of food and service you want to offer, and to do it better than anyone else nearby.

So if you choose healthy takeout, for example, take a look at places in another part of town that do that extremely well, and even consider hiring one of their people to help you get your place off the ground.

So, to summarize:

-- Consistency in logo / and look of signage

-- Know what the customers want

-- Differentiate yourself from nearby competitors in terms of what you offer

-- Make sure the food and service (and cleanliness, etc.) are extremely good

-- Leverage current loyal customers of the newsagent to get new customers to the restaurant

-- Hire at least one experienced employee

Good luck!
