will a babyliss pro nano titanium flat iron fry my hair?

will that flat iron fry my hair off? i've heard rumors of some poeple using it and it killed thier hair and the ends literally fell off. is it because they set it to the max? i have thin hair and since it goes up to 450 degress, if i put it at like 300 would my hair still fry? (even when i use my chi iron guard?)
I've never heard of hair literally burning off, but there are certain products that you can put in your hair before straightening it that will keep it protected (recommended by hairdressers, but not necessary).
