What is the best styling product and conditioner for thick, naturally curly, frizzy hair?
I have very thick, naturally curly, and frizzy hair, and no product I've used so far seems to help with frizz or curl definition. I've tried the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted line, the Sunsilk Curls and Waves line, Catwalk Curls Rock, and Paul Mitchell Flexible Hold Gel (out of all of them, this one almost worked well). It seems like no matter what I use, my hair is always frizzy, flat on top, poofy at the bottom, and either crunchy and stiff, or limp and greasy looking. What products/ conditioner that can be easily found in a pharmacy would you recommend? Should I use a gel or a mousse or something else? How do you style your hair?
*I recently got my hair cut and the longest layer is just below my shoulders when its dry, while the shortest layer is about neck length and poofs out like mushroom. How can I weigh that layer down and make it blend in with the rest of my hair?
** I shower at night, so I usually sleep on wet hair. Is this causing frizz?
Regarding sleeping on wet hair I would try plopping:

If it's mostly dry I would do a "pineapple". Put your hair up in a very high, loose ponytail with a cloth wrapped hair tie (also known as scrunchie). This will prevent the curls form being stretched out and stuff. Also to prevent frizzing and damage from moving in your sleep try sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase or scarf. I also made this video on pinneappling:
If you want to run out and pick up some products locally, I recommend trying the following:
- Drugstore: L'oreal out of bed weightless texturizer (black tub, use under gel), LA Looks or Herbal essences gels, Suave naturals or vo5 conditioners, L'oreal vive pro hydra gloss for dry hair or nutri gloss for curly hair, red Cream of Nature shampoo
- Organic/specialty store (like whole foods): Giovanni Direct Leave in condish, Giovanni Triple Tea Treat shampoo, G conditioners, Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose or White Camellia Conditioners, AO B-5 Design gel
- ULTA: Devacurl products, Biosilk rock hard gelee, MOP-c curl defining cream (They also carry drugstore products and giovanni.)
These are all good things I have used, but be sure to tinker around with amounts and how you use any products. For hair type specific products check out these forums:

There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. However, the most popular ones are usually only available online.
Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find reviews by region here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons
*Don't shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair. Scrunch or twirl hair to achieve desired shape. A leave in conditioner under gel is generally good.
*Avoid terrycloth towels on hair; use linen, paper towels, or t-shirts instead.
*Try plopping to decrease drying time: http://www.wikihow.com/Plop-Your-Hair
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don't touch (or brush!) your hair while it’s drying.
*Once completely dry scrunch out any crunchy texture.
Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It’s pretty radical—no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones—but it’s so great for curly hair.
