How do I get a patent for an existing product?
Not sure if I need a patent.I have a suggestion to improve an existing product.But I don't want the company to have the idea for free,lest they decide to use it without my consent.How do I notify the company of my idea without being at risk of not being compensated if they approve it?
You can claim a patent for an existing product or device. You should research whether or not your improvement has actually been registered - see links below on researching thru Google Patents. Also check out the LegalMatch Law Library, they have over 25 articles related to patents - some of which are linked below. if your idea is unique and you can demonstrate that it is an improvement over an existing patented design, you'll probably be granted a patent - then approach the company about buying or licensing your idea (patented, of course!).
