Another Universe question?
Coming from the stance of the Big Bang theory. If everything in the universe was at a singular point at one time what was around it? If the Universe is every expanding.... What is it expanding into... Nothingness? Darkness? If you think about it nothingness is something. It is space. Just like volume of an object can be measured so can "space" (whats not being occupied by mass). Humans have always known that there are limits. (eg. going from point A to B is x distance). Is it just possible that we may never comprehend the universe's vastness? Many people say they understand that universe is infinite but can we as humans really grasp that concept? Or is it possible that everything makes up something bigger and is made of something smaller in a never-ending cycle. For example, maybe atoms are made of a cluster of galaxies, or the milkyway and all the other galaxies make up an atom. Hahaha just something to think about.
There is always room for speculation. It is known that time and space are highly distorted by gravity near a black hole which also has a singularity (throw away your rulers because nothing is sacred?). It appears that light can travel (through empty space) across the universe which does not appear to be very lumpy (one light years seems as long as the next). Even the 'space' between orbiting electrons and the nucleus of an atom appears to be a pure vacuum. A pure vacuum is the total absence of matter (although photons and neutrinos constantly pass through it). Rather than rely on pure speculation scientists try to make accurate observation then explain what has been observed. Hollywood SciFi movies can always go one step beyond (using plastic models?).
