When using brilliantine, do you iron hair first?

I've lately become interested in using brilliantine, but am curious about how to use it. If one uses a hot iron (I'm thinking marcel) would you put in the brilliantine first, or after?

Putting it in after seems like it might comb out the ironing, but putting it in first seems like it could become a fire hazard...
