Laminates Sheer

How much is TOO MUCH brown in a living/dining room?
I have to paint my living/dining room, and I'm stumped. My floors are a light oak laminate with mocha/multi throw rugs (some medium blue/rose colors mixed in), couches a medium brown, curtains in living room are ivory sheer, mocha roman shades over the french doors in the dining room (leading to the outside). I want to go with a light to medium beige brown, but am also thinking maybe a light khaki brown. Would that be too much brown? Current color is white.
Second question: This is an "L-shaped" living area. I do plan to painting the living room and the dining room the same color. There is one wall in the living room that connects to the upstairs hall (this is a bi-level home). I want to leave that white because I don't want the same color going upstairs. Is that okay? I would have 3 walls of the living room color, and one white, and then 4 walls of the dining room (one shared living/dining room wall), the color.
It might be dull looking with that much brown. Do you have other colors thrown in like, pillows, picture frames, vases, etc? If not I would ditch the more brown idea. Maye paint one wall brown and then plan on decorating that wall with an accent color to liven things up.
My parent shave a muti-level home like yours and only have two walls in their home painted the same color. The other two are white and continue upstairs. It looks just fine.
