Can I use a home hair dye kit to put streaks in my hair like highlights?
I've used home highlighting kits at home before and they always turn out to be too bright and brassy. I used a caramel/hazel color before. This year I want to try using red. I found a great shade of red by clairol hydrience ruby twilight or intense dark red. I was always wondering if this product was good. And, can you use a normal all over hair dye to put just streaks in your hair?
Yes, you can. The best way to go through with this is to purchase the dye and lift separately at a beauty supply store. These seem to work better than the prepackaged kits. Also, you'll need a mixing bowl, brush, gloves, and a cap to pull the hair strands through to dye. Depending on your hair color, you'll need a higher lift number (20, 30, 40, 60) for the darker your hair is, that way it'll lift your natural color and deposit the desired color. I have dark brown hair and use a #40. If your highlights come out too bright and brassy, try a lower volume lift. Also, be sure to put some type of treatment when you're planning to be in the sun and/or in chlorine and salt water, because all of those elements brighten and turn highlights into a dry, copper/brassy shade.
