How should I wash cloth diapers when babies have yeast infections?
I cloth diaper my twins and they both have yeast infections. I normally use the Kirkland environmentally safe detergent with 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse. Then I run them through an extra rinse. Will that get the yeast out? It's cold and snowing so I can't line dry right now, they go in the drier. My mom wants me to use bleach, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm thinking they might have been susceptible to yeast because of the wipe warmer. I have cloth wipes that I wash with the diapers and I use a wipe warmer. We use a few drops of tea tree oil in warm water in the wipe warmer, but it smells faintly of moldy washer once in a while. Is there a better wipe warmer solution for cloth wipes? Thank you for all your help.
BTW For the inevitable, "why would you use cloth diapers?", I do it because it's better for the environment, skin and wallet.
WTG for you and doing the best thing for you, the twins and the environment. I did cloth diapering for DD1 during her first year as a result of getting a yeast infection at 3 days old. She was very susceptible to them and we never used the commercial wipes opting out for just plain baby wash cloths and a bucket of warm water. No additives to the water or anything. We would fill the bucket (small ice cream tub) with water just before change time. I would do away with the warmer entirely. You could always keep a thermal water bottle / coffee carafe with warm water inside, near the change area or in the diaper bag for convenience.
As for washing, try a cold rinse first as heat helps yeast grow. The bleach idea is a great idea as long as you make sure to rinse clean and wash again.
You may not have the issue that i did and DD's became bloody blisters as well. Zinc creams and diaper rash ointments never would work for them and the pediatrician prescribed a topical cream. The cost was horrendous so I'm glad that I watched what the pharmacist put in. Hydrocortisone and Vagisil/canesten mixed together. Use the hydrocortisone sparingly mixed with the canesten. (hydrocortisone can bleach out the pigment in skin, making it more obvious on non-caucasian people)
