Can I paint directly on metal w/enamal model paints?
I have a cast iron candle holder I want to paint - do I need to prime it first? also, what about other metals with enamal model paint.

The main function of a primer is to create a surface on which paint will adhere. Metal primers have been formulated for that purpose. Secondary function is to create an even coloured layer so the colour is more regular after painting.
Enamel paints could be used directly on metal but I would not advise it. Best to use a primer first.
