Instant Conditioner

which are more economical heaters - oil column heaters or reverse cycle air conditioners.?
I have a 15 column oil heater operating at 2400W or an air conditioner which all I can see on it is 2000W. Which will be more economical to run. I know air conditioners provide almost instant heat, but when you turn them off they can get cold quicker.
By a "reverse cycle A/C", I think you mean a heat pump.
These machines provide A/C in the summer, and can provide some heating in the winter.
They would work be liberating heat in the plenum of your furnace, which would then be spread throughout the home by the blower fan.
Most A/C-Heat pumps have limits. They are not a full system heat pump or geothermal unit.
An A/C-Heat pump, can usually (if "sized" to the home properly) provide heat up to an outside temperature of -14 to -18 degrees C.
This may be enough heat to cover you in, say, Arizona, but will not provide enough heating for a home in, say, Illinois.
You would be advised to contact an HVAC professional to determine the capabilities of your unit.
Generally, a modern one would be more efficient that the oil column heater. But whether it will be able to heat you throughout the winter, that is another topic!
There is another type of unit, it is wall mounted, It looks like those motel units that generally provide heating, fan-air-circulation, or cooling.
This is not a true heat-pump. They work with a heating element in them, and provide heat as any electric heater would. They are popular in small appartments.
Again, generally, a new one, is a bit more efficient than an oil column heater. An older one, though, will likely not be as efficient as a new oil column heater.
There should be a manual or a decal on either unit that states their efficiency ratings. If you do not have all this info, you will have to consult an HVAC professional to determine their relative efficiencies.
OR: A local college might be able to help you, if they have professors or instructors that teach this topic. (Look for an Engineering or Science Department.)
They will need all the stats on both units, and will do the math to determine an answer. They will tell you what information you will need to provide them....
The Manufacturer, Model Number, Serial Number, Date of Manufacture, will likely be needed, along with information telling the input power, and output btu's.
Good Luck!
