a second to the original question of the style of cam?
i want to build up the 305 because as one fella said get a 327 although it is worth more than the malibu....thats the point, i want to create power on the cheap, engine masters has outlined how to build up a 305 to put out 372 horses!!! this doesn't envolve replacing the pistons, merely a top end build up, a cam from comp cams and aftermarket vortech head (not sure of the brand though i could check) and edlebrock performer single plane for the vortech and a 650 demon carb, i was going to go a step farther and bulk up the bottom end with those cupped pistons, look into the posibilty of stroking it although i mightn't, but in particular i wanted to make sure i could use the comp cams "thumpr" i like the power band it claims and they make it for my engine, i just don't want to find out that it isn't a hydraulic lifter set up...yeah smarties no hydraulic with flat tappet (the tappet rides the cam as a lifter to pushrod where a hydraulic has oil as a cushion, so help, 1977 305 chevy code u
Well myself being a fan of odd ball engine build ups for alternatives to the vast amounts of common engines. I would say go for it. only thing i have a problem with is the cam choice that you would like to run. I have ran the cam before in other sbc engines and sbf engines as well. it does make decent power, but the amount of lobe center angle is too much for what you are doing. 107 degrees is crazy. the grand pappy of cams had once said if you need more then 108 degrees then the cam is too big. Also note that this is a hydraulic retrofit roller cam. which means adjustable rockers and good pushrods, spring change as well. I personally like the stroker kit i got from speed o motive that took my 305 to a 340. zero decked the block and used the small 58cc chamber heads ported. made good compression on it. then used the comp cams magnum 280hr factory roller cam, since i had a factory roller cam engine. checked for piston to valve clearence and didn't have to change anything. havent had it on a dyno or drag strip as of yet, but it does make some good torque and lots of noise when opened up. this is the link for that type of kit. http://www.speedomotive.com/ps-26-8-305-to-340-cid-stroker-crank-kit.aspx good luck with your choices on what you want to do with it. Just remember to match everything to everything that you buy for your build up.
