Head Self

Would you consider shooting someone in the back of the head an act of self-defence?
That's what it's being termed in the cases of at least five individuals who weren't carrying firearms at the time, regardless of their political persuasions or allegiances.

Is this adequate or excessive force (particularly given the level of equipment of those shot, as well as the placement of the shots)?
Serious answers only please.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people who said that they were defending themselves! Unless of course every one was attacking each other walking backwards...I can't see how this could be justified as "self defense". Not to mention one of the victims also being shot 5 times at close range...how can people be so gullible as to believe that? No, in my opinion it was a massacre or if you must: "excessive force"/Oh but sure the media had a field day saying that these "terrorists" attacked the militants with "weapons" such as chairs, wooden bats, poles.
If people stormed a ship I was on Mission Impossible style in the dead of night by helicopters in International Waters were I would presume it was safe...I suppose my natural instinct would be to protect myself too. Does that make me a terrorist? Obviously in some peoples eyes...
