Hair Straightener Ceramic

How can I clean my ceramic hair straightener?
When I turn it on it smells like something burning, and the plates feel greasy. I tried using rubbing alcohol but it doesnt really work, does anyone have any other ideas?
they say you can spray some windex on a paper towel and gently wipe the ceramic iron. but whatever you do just be gentle and don't use strong cleaning products
