What will help the root hair cells to take up ions?
A. Higher concentration of ions in the root hair cells than in the soil
(Or)
B. Larger surface area of the root hair cells.
Please give me the correct answer with a reason. Thanks.
A larger surface area.
Generally, root cells move ions around via active transport; that is, they actively use energy to pump ions in or out. This isn't fully true, since there are sure to be various passive ion channels in the membrane (which would actually be an argument against choice A anyway, because a greater internal ion concentration would inhibit a passive inward flow of ions; this would be against the ion concentration gradient). However, that is neither here nor there, since as I said, ion flow is usually an active process, not passive.
Thus, since it's not a matter of concentrations, it is a matter of how many ion pumps can physically be put into the cell membrane. The more surface area you have, the more ion pumps that can be embedded in the cell membrane, and the more ion pumps in the membrane, the more ions that can be taken in.
