How do I remove a burn mark from my straightener/flat iron on the bathroom counter?
It's a white laminate counter. It's very large, but nothing melted. The straightener is red so it left these red-orange burn marks from the hot plastic. I'm assuming it's something on TOP of the actual counter. Since it's burned, though, I'm not exactly sure what to do to remove it. We've tried soap and water and soft scrub with bleach. It isn't something we can cover up. We'll either have to clean it off somehow or replace the countertop entirely.
What you have is very slight fire damage (or just scalding) in this case. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do as burn damage is permanent. The discoloration will not come out. You have a few options:
1) Replace the entire counter (costly)
2) Replace a portion of the counter (costly, and difficult to match and replace)
3) Sand the top of the counter lightly enough to get rid of the marks (with an electric hand sander). You can use sand paper with different types of grit, but an electric hand sander, like a Craftsman Mouse, $20, should get the job done. Use a rough grit sand to get the discoloration out, then lighter and lighter grit until the counter is nice and smooth in that area. You will have to sand a spot larger than the spot burned si that it blends nicely with the rest of the counter and does not look obvious.
The problem now becomes refinishing. You have to refinish that area so that it matches the rest of the counter. Depending on your type of counter material or finish, this can be difficult or easy. I am assuming it is a basic bathroom-type finish, not a granite or corian, so it shouldn't be that difficult.
If you weigh the time and energy to do number 3 above, you may find that you are better off spending the money to just have it replaced. Don't forget, you can always try the 3rd option and if you don't like the way it turns out, you can still replace it after the fact.
