Do I need to sharpen my new ice skates before I go out on the ice with them?
I am a novice to ice skating (done it twice and loved it) and have just bought a pair of boots.
However the leading edge of the blade is perfectly flat (about 3.5 – 4 mm thick (for those not metric that’s 0.137795 – 0.157480 inches).
Do I need to sharpen these before I take them out on their maiden voyage? Also they are for general ice skating purposes not ice hockey…
(By the way I believe this just proves how ridiculous the imperial system of measurement is when dealing with small dimensions…)
Actually, I think you need to sharpen them. You don't want the blade to be perfectly flat, it is supposed to be slightly concave so you can skate on edges. This website has some good insights about blades.
