Where did the whole dumb blonde thing come from?
Like why blondes? Why not dumb redheads or dumb brunettes? Why do people always pick on blondes? :'(
There is, as far as I know, no evidence of blondes being regarded as stupid until the 20thC, when effective hair bleach became available. However, to be blonde has always, in W. Europe, been desirable in terms of female beauty.
I suspect that the stereotype became established because artificial blondes, making the most of their atractions and out to trap a prosperous husband, deliberately concealed any brains they had in order to flatter the men's sense of superiority. If there are a lot of blonde bimbos around, it would be an easy identification to make.
However, to be a successful bimbo actually calls for quite a lot of brains and quite a lot of dedication. I imagine that the impression of stupidity was carefully cultivated, and quite false. These ladies, in a word, had a vested interest in preserving the stereotype - and their partners who were taken in would (could!) do nothing to combat it.
Actually, I don't think the stereotype is taken very seriously; the image of the empty-headed blonde man-trap is largely a Hollywood convention from the 1930s. In the real world, it does not have much weight. I write as the father of two naturally blonde daughters, both of whom are bright and successful women. Neither has met any attitude problems because of her hair colour.
