A question about Fynbos plants, especially proteas- can they grown in Southern Italy?
I would like to have some protea starter packs and fynbos seeds sent to my girlfriend's father in Southern Italy so we can make a little patch of the Cape in Apulia. Will these plants survive ? The Cape has a mediterranean climate and Apulia is very hot and dry in the summer with rain, grapes grow in both areas but will the delicate proteas and fynbos plants manage in the soil? Any botanists out there?

Try the finebush people. They seem to have the whole market for proteas and seeds etc. There are forums on their site, so you can ask for info. You can also contact them for more info.
According to the first link, proteas are not so difficult to grow. They must just be well drained and not too rich a soil. To germinate the seeds, one apparently needs some sort of smoke disc to imitate the conditions the seeds need i.e. after a muntain fire.
Good luck.
