what dose cone mean when fireing ceramics?
First of all, I am a potter and spent 4 years at college to learn this kind of thing! A cone is a temperature measure. They are really tapered pyramids, shaped so they stand up and not 'cones' in the strictest sense. They are made of different amounts of clay material, set to melt at different temperatures. You set three different cones on a shelf in front of the hole in the kiln door so you can see them through it. As a certain temperature is reached, one of the cones will melt and bend over so you know you've reached that temperature. When the third one bends over, you know you need to switch off as maximum temperature has been acheived. Most kilns are digital now and you don't use them as much but they are a standby in case of malfunction.
'Stilts' are the things you set the pots on to support them so the glaze doesn't stick them to the kiln shelf, especially if they are glazed all over, and 'bat' is another word for kiln shelf. Props are the interlocking things used to support the kiln shelves.
