how do i clear up the brown water for good?
help i have a 10 gallon fish tank , im useing distilled water, i have about 15 small gold fish in side. i am changeing the water weekly by only takeing out about 25 % of the water and replaceing it with new. i have a filter and i feed the gold fish the pebble goldfish food once a day. The water looks brown after about 3 days and will not clear up. how or what do i use to fix this problem?
Depends what caused it. It could be either brown from accumulated fish waste or some kind of brown algae. I'm inclined to the former as goldfish are champion poopers and 15 of them in one small tank is simply too much for the filter to handle, unless you have a top notch canister filter. Also don't overfeed them as goldfish are very greedy and obviously more food eaten means more poop. Just small pinches once a day is enough, occasionally let them diet for a few days it won't hurt them & helps clear their digestive systems. Unless you really have space & financial constraints, suggest to get a much bigger tank if you intend to keep these goldfish long term. Even a large cheap plastic tank is better than their current accommodation. And ensure your filter is capable of filtering more than 3 times the tank volume per hour.
If you have an algae problem, make sure the tank is not sited near the windows with direct sunlight, ensure tank lighting is on for only between 8-10 hours and don't have excess uneaten food.
