Hi, is it true that Jehovah's Witnesses get special health treatment and get the best care at hospitals?
We are catholics and my mother doesn't like Jehovah's Witnesses, but she told our family doctor that we are Jehovah's Witnesses. When I ask her why she was doing that, she said she want us to be given the best medical care and treatments without the use of blood.
Hospitals are noted for being fair and impartial, and treat all patients the same, respecting their beliefs.
However, Jehovah's witnesses beliefs, including the Bible's command to "abstain from...blood", at Acts of the Apostles (or just, "Acts")15:28,29, are a protection in many ways. A prominent U.S.medical journal once noted that 10,000 Americans alone, in one year alone, died just from the three main complications of blood transfusions--hepatitis B, hemolytic reactions and mistakes in cross-matching. There are many more complications than this, including, of course, AIDS. Using a safe transfusion alternative, such as saline solution, Dextran, etc. avoids these dangers.
Also, to avoid use of transfusions, skilled and dedicated surgeons have developed many special techniques to operate without losing much blood--laser surgery, electrocautery (using a hot scalpel that cauterizes as it cuts), thorough clamping of bleeding vessels. This precise surgery now permits surgeons to perform open heart surgery on infants while losing only a teaspoonful of blood!
So getting bloodless surgery assures you of not only avoiding the dangers inherent in blood transfusions, but of getting the most precise surgery.
A side benefit is that you recover from surgery faster and with less danger of serious internal infection, a constant worry with surgery. Another important benefit, if you have to have cancer surgery, is reduced risk of the cancer spreading or coming back somewhere else, since your immune system is free to hunt down and kill left-over cancer "seed cells" instead of being kept busy killing off and digesting billions of foreign blood cells from a blood transfusion. Remember, blood is a tissue, and you know about tissue rejection in transplants. All "foreign" blood cells must be eventually destroyed and eliminated by the immune system. And if it's working on that, it's not working on finding and destroying cancer cells. One medical journal said, "The cancer surgeon of the future may well need to become a bloodless surgeon."
