I just moved into a new house with two flower beds in front. The large one had what I assume was top soil in it, it didn't look all that bad so I added some compost to it and planted away. However the other smaller flower bed was full of clay and poor soil. I replaced the clay with top soil and compost. the smaller flower bed has a sprinkler head and the larger bed is watered by me in the morning. I planted bulbs in the larger bed last fall and about 3/4 of them came up, those who did come up seemed fine and bloomed normal. I recently planted identical perenial flowers and shrubs in the two beds. The smaller bed is doing fine the larger bed everything but the bulbs are dying. Light is the same for both the only major difference is the soil in them, and the method of watering. I check the beds for moisture later in the day and they seem equal despite the different method of watering. I would assume soil but the flowers died with in two days of planting would poor soil be that quick?
