Is anyone embarrased by old photos of themselves?
My mom passed away when I was 14. She used to do my hair every morning and take me clothes shopping. After she passed away, that stopped. My dad was too broke to take my brother and I clothes shopping. As a result, my hairstyles and clothing sucked in high school. Eventually, with maturity I learned what hairstyles and fashion look good. Some people look at old photos of me and don't recognize me or think it is a different person. I used to wear my bangs poofed up with a barrette and a scrunchie too high on my head. Is it common for some people to look bad in the past but improve their appearance over time looking completely different? Do you think people will just focus on how I look now rather than how I looked in the past? I would be especially embarrassed if guys I am dating saw my old yearbook photos. I am sure if my mom was still alive she would've made sure my brother and I looked good in high school. My dad had no fashion sense.
My dear, thank goodness you didn't grow up in the 80s! I have photos of me with big hair, mega-scrunchies, leg warmers, jackets with big shoulder pads, permed hair...oh it's hideous.
You shouldn't be embarrassed - as you get older you look at those photos and have a laugh. In fact, you actually bring out those old photos at 40th birthdays and things so people CAN have a laugh at your expense! You look back and just see it as a phase in your life and you realise looks don't matter in the scheme of things.
Loads of people get more "style" as they get older. Not many kids have style at 14, or 17 for that matter. I am so sorry you lost your mother and I'm sure when you look at some of those photos it just reminds you that she wasn't there and the sad times. I'm sure your Dad tried his best, I guess his priorities were to have a house to live in and food on the table. Dad's are hopeless with girl stuff!
My husband loves looking at my dorky old photos, I like looking at his. People DO change, some become completely unrecognisable from what they were before. Some people lose a lot of weight, or gain weight, or get a great haircut or fantastic clothes. No-one is going to judge you by what you wore as a kid!! And if they did there would be something wrong with them. You are you, the you you are today. Keep the photos, you'll want them later.
