What exactly is a pH acid balanced shampoo? (and not just a brand- like an actual definition)?
The PH scale measures how acid or alkaline something is. Neutral on the scale is 7, the lower numbers are acid and the higher ones are alkaline. Water is neutral, with a ph of 7 (in most cases).
Our hair is naturally slightly acid, ph lower than 7. The best shampoos for our hair are about 4-6. Most cheap shampoos are much higher in the alkaline range, and that's how we get "dry" hair from the chemical imbalance. A PH balanced shampoo can be somewhat misleading if it's labeled that way, because legally, putting ph balanced simply means that it's stable, or will stay at whatever ph level it is on the shelf. You want to look for one that actually states the number. Don't go much below a ph of 3.5 though, or else it's too acid, and that can cause damage too.
