What art elements were used in "The Weeping Woman"?
What art elements (line, tone, colour, shape, texture) were used in Picasso's "Weeping Woman" painting?
More than anything, the context of this picture is important. Picasso painted a series of Weeping Woman pictures - the most elaborate being that in the Tate Museum, London 1937 oil on canvas for months after he had completed his anti-war masterpiece Guernica. In this picture, is the image a screaming woman holding her dead baby. The mourning ofthis woman for her child continues into his Weeping Woman series.
The Mater Dolorosa, the weeping Virgin is a trad. image in Spanish art. But the woman's features in the Tate Weeping Woman were that of his current lover Dora Maar.
Line and shape: In this picture Picasso introduces new features as part of his facial deformations: the over dramatized eyes, heavy eye lashes and brow, while continuing the previous characteristics of his work - the angular shapes, the mask like impression of the face which recall the way he handled faces in his first masterpiece Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and his Cubist period that followed. The eye wanders over the sharp surfaces and one is led by the jagged black lines to the centre of the picture, her mouth and chin where the flesh seems to be peeled away. The handkerchief she stuffs into her mouth is like a shard of glass. Also note the snaking lines of her hair.
Color and texture: In his mural Guernica, Picasso used somber blacks, greys and white; in this picture, the palette is harsh and angry with use of strong colors: red, blue, yellow, orange jarring on the senses and evoking pain and frenzy.
