What happens to an English peerage if the holder renounces it?
In the days when English peers sat in the House of Lords, a peer who wanted to become an MP had to renounce his peerage, as Anthony Wedgwood Benn (Tony Benn) did. What then became of the peerage?
Did it simply cease to exist?
Or could you simply hand it on to your eldest son, assuming you had one?
Or if renouncing it meant your son also lost the right to it, did it go back to a collateral heir - e.g. a brother, uncle or nephew?
The titles goes into abeyance until the death of the last holder, the title of Viscount Stansgate is technically in abeyance and upon Tony Benn's death his oldest son, Stephen, will inherit the title if he wants to. Nowadays of course hereditary peers can sit in the House of Commons if they are elected.
