Why is BP held to blame for oil spill in GoM?
This was an American owned rig, operating in USA waters with a USA crew, registered in The Marshall Islands, presumably working to USA Health & Safety legislation.
Surely BP should be responsible after the oil well had been handed over to them?
Contractually at least, the responsibility for the accident would appear to lie with Transocean. Like an architect, the oil giants design and oversee the job. It is the building firm, Transocean, that is paid to bring it to fruition, and shoulders the blame if anything goes wrong.

Finally, is the most unpopular man in BP the author of the contract which did not include a clause making Transocean responsible for any mistakes such as we have witnessed?
We don't know who to blame until all of the facts are brought out into the open.
